KERRY BEMOANS BUSH “START AND STOP” IRAQ POLICY
Senator John Kerry (D-Massachusetts), in his strongest statement yet on the Middle East, today accused the Bush administration of pursuing a “start and stop” foreign policy approach to Iraq. In a prepared statement, the former Lieutenant Governor said “It has been over 48 hours since I last urged President Bush to avoid a rush to war with Iraq, and I do not intend to urge avoiding a rush to war again until tomorrow. The administration’s failure to use this historic window of opportunity to force regime change in Iraq can only be described as dismal. It’s the clearest indication yet that we need a steadier hand in charge of foreign policy.”
According to remarks by his press secretary, “Senator Kerry was the first Democratic presidential candidate to warn against the rush to war in Iraq, and today he has staked out his position as the first to declare it has taken too long to free the Iraqi people from the brutal dictatorship of Saddam Hussein. Be sure to be here tomorrow when he will reestablish his foreign policy leadership by warning President Bush not to rush to war with Iraq.”
On his way to his daily appointment with his hair stylist, Senator Kerry told reporters “I haven’t recommended giving the UN inspectors in Iraq more time to find a 'smoking gun' in almost a week. If President Bush didn’t spend so much time rushing to war with Iraq, he could have gotten rid of Hussein three or four times by now.”

“SITTING ON HANDS” CHARGES UNFAIR, CLAIM DEMOCRATS
Democrats reacted angrily today to media reports that they “sat on their hands” while Republicans cheered calls in President Bush’s State of the Union address for tax cuts for parents, married couples, and all other taxpayers.
“That is like so unfair. They said the cameras would be focused on the other side of the aisle when he talked about taxes, so we could go to the bathroom,” charged Shelia Jackson Lee (D-Texas). Congresswoman Lee was chauffeured 1½ blocks from her office to the House of Representatives 3½ hours before the beginning of the President’s speech, in order to reserve a coveted aisle seat that would guarantee her a photo opportunity with the President. “This is further proof that a vast right-wing conspiracy controls the media in America,” she added.
Presidential hopeful Joseph Lieberman (D-Connecticut) claimed “the sound in that hall was atrocious. When President Bush said ‘we should send the checks to American families now’, I thought he said ‘we should send the Czechs to American alleys now.’ Besides, Dick Cheney was making faces at me.”
Other Democrats implicated the White House. “The advance copy of the speech they gave me didn’t mention tax cuts for all American tax-payers,” charged Nancy Pelosi (D-California), the new House majority leader. Instead, she claimed, it included a long section on soil conditions on the Crawford, Texas, ranch owned by President Bush. Congressman Pelosi was unable to supply her copy of the speech for examination. “My dog ate it,” she said.
In a move that White House press secretary Ari Fleischer called “highly unusual,” Senate minority leader Tom Daschle (D-South Dakota), called for President Bush to schedule a repeat performance of his highly-acclaimed State of the Union address. “I’m deeply disappointed. Public opinion polls and focus groups have now shown us when our constituents think we should applaud. Given that our attention was focused on thwarting President Bush’s war on global terrorism, it’s only fair that Democrats should get a second chance to be seen listening to the President's speech.”

KENNEDY CAUTIONS CROSSING BRIDGE TO WAR
Public opinion polls taken after President Bush’s Tuesday State of the Union address show that 98% of Americans agree that we should use military force to disarm Iraq, while 1% disagree and 1% are undecided. Before the speech, 97% agreed, 1% disagreed, and 2% were undecided.
When asked for his comments on the poll results, Senator Edward Kennedy (D-Massachusetts) said: “Fully half of all Americans who were undecided before the State of the Union address remain undecided. President Bush has obviously not made a convincing case for regime change in Iraq. We should not rush to war until he convinces undecided Americans, and our allies in France, that war is justified. That's a bridge we should be very careful crossing.”
